Kolkata Ten days after he told a Congress-sponsored tribal rally in Orissa that there existed “two Indias — Ameeron ki Hindustan and Garibon ka Hindustan”, AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi today stretched it to Left-ruled West Bengal, saying the CPM was the “Ameeron ki Bengal” while the poor and downtrodden made the “other Bengal”.

“Ameeron ki Bengal, the rich Bengal, belongs to the CPM. The other Bengal is for the poor,” Gandhi said in a 20-minute speech at Shahid Minar Maidan where he launched a Youth Congress membership drive. The BPL list in Bengal, he claimed, did not have the poor but only those with the CPM. He said nearly 45% of the poor did not have ration cards.

Accusing the CPM of “stealing” the money of the poor, Gandhi said: “The final verdict on Communists in Bengal has already been delivered.” Drawing a parallel with Soviet Union, he said: “One fine morning, you will find the CPM has vanished from Bengal... Yeh faisla ho chuka hai.”

“I was in China, talking to senior Chinese leaders. I did not ask them, rather they asked me: what is happening with the Communists in Bengal?...We heard one day that it (Soviet Union) is finished. The ideology is dead in the rest of the world. It will happen in Bengal too. People are ready to uproot the Communists,” he said.

Not once did Gandhi mention Mamata Banerjee or her Trinamool Congress. His remarks drew an immediate CPM response. Party spokesman Mohammed Selim said: “Rahul would do better not to ponder over the future of Communists. It is difficult to understand if his visit was aimed at writing the epitaph of the Congress or its resurrection.”

Rahul's visit by ravi on 08 Sep 2010

Average, middle class Indian expected and had thought of Rahul Gandhi as somewhat honest and different from the normal rouges going around as politicians. This kind of mindless rhetoric would erode the goodwill he has garnered. It is bafflin, he has not uttered a word oon the rampant CWG corruption and price rise.

Same old same old by Ravi on 08 Sep 2010

Rahul must understand that till now the educated middle class Indian thought of him as different from the genaral politician. If he continues with this kind of mindless rehtoric aimed at the vote bank, he will lose the goodwill he has managed to garner. People expect him to speak on issues like corruption as i commonwealth games, rising prices and other problems plaguing the common man. His silence is baffling to say the least.

Rahul's visit by Politucal observer on 07 Sep 2010

Rahul Gandhi needs much more grooming to make a prolific orator. He should be much more knowledgable too.His father, however, mastered the art of oration in record time.In our state Congress is in total mess and it's doubtful if Rahul could at all revive the old spirit of congrss by his personal charisma which is likely to fade out with more visits to the state.
