Mumbai, March 4 In a surprise raid by railway authorities on Wednesday morning, 100 quarters in the railway colony at Teen Bungalow in Khar (East) were found to be occupied by people other than railway employees.

Divisional Commercial Manager Divang Rai and Divisional Personnel Officer Yatri Dave Vitikar conducted the raids at the colony with teams of railway officials and Railway Protection Force (RPF) and found these quarters sub-let.

According to sources, most of the staff who are allotted quarters in the colony do not stay there. While 24 quarters were found occupied illegally in building number 181, several quarters in other buildings — 182, 184, 185, 188 and 195 — were also sub-let.

A esident of building number 181 said, “An RPF man posted at Bandra Terminus has given possession of the entire building to unauthorised persons and is taking Rs 1,700 per quarter plus Rs 200 for water charges and Rs 100 for electricity. This RPF man also resides in this building. Quarters in other buildings too are let out in a similar manner.”

However, during the raid, most of the illegal residents were not found in these quarters. A senior official of the Western Railway has said that the railway staff who are real allottees of these quarters will be given notices.

On paper, there is a shortage of railway quarters with a huge number of railway employees waiting in the queue.

When contacted, WR Divisional Railway Manager Satyaprakash said, “Time after time, we conduct these raids and prepare a report. When it is established that employees are letting out their quarters on rent, action will be taken against them.”
