Work on Dahanu Road station is on in full swing to make it a part of the Mumbai suburban railway section on the Western Railway.
At Palghar station work on widening of tracks, relocation of OHE, signaling and telecom installation is being done. In fact a board at the station reads, “Work in progress, inconvenience is regretted for better tomorrow.” As work on platform -1 of Palghar station was going on, another temporary platform was made near the same line. “In 30 days from November 25 to December 25, this temporary platform was made and during that period all main line trains had a halt there. On Monday, at 2 pm, platform 1 became operational,” said DK Saini, Chief project Manager.
The Railways gave a bonus of Rs five thousand per day to contractor Sunil Kodnani (M/S Sai Projects) for saving the railways and commuters 30 days of trouble. Kodnani has been given the contract for all the major work at Palghar and four foot over bridges-two at Dahanu, one at Umroli station and one at Vaitarna.
“In the month of July, new goods’ shed was commissioned. The old goods’ shed was dismantled for making new platforms. Now, work on track-5 is almost complete,” said Rao. Adding, “The new goods shed is a lot more spacious. Earlier, it was 6 x 3 metre but now it is 40 x 3.6 metre. Now 40 coaches may be kept here while earlier there was place only for 20 coaches.”
Work on passenger amenities is under process at Vaitarna, Sapale, Kelve Road, Palghar, Umroli, Boisar, Vangaon stations.
Wait finally over
Dahanu Road is 63 km away from the Virar station. Starting local train services on this section was a long standing demand of the residents of the region. For commuters travelling daily from Dahanu Road to Mumbai city and back, the only alternative has been to travel to Virar by passenger trains or shuttles and then take a local train. In 1989, Madhavrao Scindia, the then minister for Railways said that this section would be converted to accommodate EMU rakes within four- five years but the promise remained unfulfilled. The project was approved by the ministry in 1999-2000. The World Bank too was scheduled to sanction a loan. But due to conflicts between Ministry of Railways and Ministry of Finance regarding the loan this project could not proceed further.
