Pune Seven countries with as many as 125 railway professionals from Europe have come to Pune to participate in the 17th men and 14th women Union Sportive Internationale Des Cheminots (USIC) World Railway Athletics Championship that will be inaugurated on Monday at the city's sports stadium at Balewadi.

India is the sole non-European member at the moment, although Korea and Pakistan have been members in the past at various points. This time around, two countries Great Britain and Germany have withdrawn at the last minute.

Railway officials are hopeful of a good performance. Last year, the Indian Railway contingent was placed second at the championship, after Russia.

"This championship was given to us as early as August 2007. We could not get the Delhi stadium because of the Commonwealth Games in 2010, but Pune has a world class stadium in Balewadi," said Rakesh Yadav, secretary, Railway Sports Promotion Board. Officials said that all teams have arrived.

The finals of the events for men and women would be conducted from February 9-12. The last time a USIC event was held in November 2005, when a badminton championship was held in Delhi. Prior to that in 1987, basketball, tennis and volleyball USIC championships were held in Delhi.
