Chandigarh Taking security as a primary area of concern, Indian Railways along with the Government Railway Police (GRP) has decided to beef up security at railway stations in the Northern Division in a phased manner. This will make the security system at railway stations similar to the one at airports.

An integrated security plan including a grid security system will be installed at the station premises. This is aimed at reducing the number of entry and exit points at stations. X-ray and scanning machines will also be placed at several points, which will be similar to the system at airports.

“The need to step up security at railway stations is the need of the hour. Being a sensitive area, security at railway stations was ignored. Recently, the railways is working in close association with the GRP, that has jointly come up with an improved security system,” said K K Mishra, Inspector General, GRP.

Security check at the Chandigarh railway station at present includes metal

detectors at the entrance, which is not even manned. This lapse results in increased chances of people evading this check easily. The GRP has thus decided to place more guards at entry points.

“While the Railways has given an in-principle approval for putting up equipment like X-ray machines, metal detectors and scanning machines at the stations, the GRP will provide the manpower,” Mishra added.

While the system will be implemented at all major railway stations under the Northern Division, the Gurgaon and Faridabad railway stations will be covered

under it in the first phase, the approval for which has been received by the GRP.

The authorities, meanwhile, said the Chandigarh railway station will be covered in the next phase.
