Mumbai With the rainy season some four months away, the Central Railway (CR) is gearing up to deal with monsoon-related problems. CR has decided to begin the cleaning of a nullah outside the Kurla carshed and also extend a culvert near Masjid station.

CR General Manager Bharat Bhushan Modgil and Municipal Commissioner Jairaj Phatak had a joint meeting last week to discuss these issues. Modgil, Mumbai’s Divisional Railway Manager (CR) JN Lal and senior officials also visited these sites on Wednesday.

Disruption in services of suburban trains is a common problem that the city faces during monsoon. To curb these problems, railways along with the BMC will start working from April. It will undertake works like de-silting and cleaning of nullahs and culverts. “Many trains are taken to the Kurla carshed which is strategically important for traffic movement while no traffic can start if any train is stuck at Masjid as it is next to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus,” said Shirniwas Mudgerikar, CR’s chief spokesperson. “But both these areas are low-lying due to which the tracks get flooded resulting in failure of train services.”

“The nullah outside the Kurla carshed is a major cause behind flooding. The BMC along with the railways will begin cleaning of the nullah from this month to avoid problems during monsoon. The culvert work at Masjid is likely to take a few more months to complete and by then monsoon would have arrived. So to avoid inconvenience we would soon be starting work,” Mudgerikar added.
