The WR and CR have added 40 services each to their existing ones. These services will be introduced on the Thane-Nerul/Vashi route, Vadala-Panvel route on the harbour line and the Virar section of the WR.
According to S S Gupta, chief spokesperson of WR, 80 percent of the new services are for the highly congested Virar section. Currently, the WR runs 1156 services; with the introduction of 40 more services, this will go up to 1196. The 12-car rakes will increase from 616 to 656.
With the latest additions, the CR services will now go up to 1410. The 12-car rake services will go up from 409 to 436. All Titwala bound trains will now have 12-car rakes.
Bharat Bhushan Modgil, General Manager of CR said, “We have given more emphasis to the recently opened Thane-Nerul-Vashi section considering its usage by the commuters. Ever since the line opened, Kurla station has seen less crowd.” The suburban railway carries 6.5 million passengers everyday. The CR and the WR have been emphasising on the introduction of new services on the Virar section primarily because of the considerable shift in population to the satellites towns around Mumbai like the Mira-Bhayander, Nalasopara and Vasai-Virar, Navi Mumbai and Ambernath-Badlapur.
“The new swanky rakes procured under MUTP Phase I would be mostly used for new added services,” said WR spokesperson Bhagwat Dahisarkar.
