Kolkata Senior officials of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and officials of the state government led by Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakrabarti met at Writers’ Buildings on Wednesday where it was decided that the Railways would submit a security plan to the state government.

The report will then be sent to the Railway Board along with its recommendations, said Dilip Mitra Additional DG (Railways).

He said it was also decided to intensify security and surveillance on trains and railway tracks.

“Recently, there has been a spate of attacks on railway property by suspected Maoists and it is jeopardising railway services. The meeting took stock of the situation and weighed on various options on how to tackle it,” said Mitra.

“We are trying to upgrade all security aspects to strengthen safety measures on the Railways,” he added.

After the Rajdhani Express was hijacked for eight hours by the Maoists on October 27 in West Midnapore district, important trains in the Maoist-affected areas, particularly between Chandil and Chakradharpur, were being escorted by pilot engines.

RPF commandos have been assigned to guard the Rajdhani Express, he said.

Kolkata Commissioner of Police Goutam Mohan Chakrabarti, who attended the meeting, assured cooperation in providing security to the Metro Railway. He said 651 additional security personnel would be required for the Metro.
