Lucknow, February 4 Demanding Centre's intervention in Maharashtra, UP Chief Minister Mayawati today said the state government has failed to discharge its constitutional obligation of providing safety and security to life and property of common people, irrespective of their caste and religion.

Condemning the violence unleashed by the activists of Maharashtra nav Nirman Sena (MNS) led by Raj Thackeray, Mayawati said the MNS is making a mockery of the Constitution and the state government remains a mute spectator.

"Our Constitution gives freedom to all its citizens to settle down in any part of the country and earn their livelihood," said Mayawati.

"The north Indians cannot be expelled from Mumbai or from other places in Maharashtra on the grounds that they are not the son of the soil," she said.

"It is a matter of great concern that the Maharashtra government is actively aiding and abetting the vandalism purported by the MNS, instead of ensuring security to the north Indian population," she alleged.

She said the Centre should give special attention to the security of the north Indian population there take action against those targeting the people on regional and parochial grounds.
