Rajkot The Rajkot city police have sent a fax message to their Kolkata counterparts in connection with the alleged abduction of a Rajkot-based businessman from there. The police said that Nanji Patel, a resident of Sanidhya Society on 150-foot Ring Road, was abducted on January 25 when he landed in Kolkata in connection with his borewell business.

According to the reports, a ransom of Rs 5 lakh has already been paid by the Patel family, and that they approached the Rajkot police only after the abductors raised the ransom amount by Rs 10 lakh.

Kailash, son of Patel, told the police that abductors called him up from his father’s cellphone on January 26, saying they would kill Patel if they were not paid a ransom of Rs 5 lakh.

The police have learnt that Kailash, through an angadia service in Soni Bazar, delivered the cash in Kolkata, which was received by some Arjun, reportedly a member of the same gang.

While the Patels were hoping that Naniji would be released, on January 27, Kailash again got a call from the abductors, who claimed that the ransom money had been looted by some other gang. They again put a ransom demand, but this time they doubled the amount.

Kailash, who claimed that on January 27 he was asked to send Rs 10 lakh, approached the local police for help on January 29. The police have asked him to lodge a complaint in this regard with the Kolkota police. The top police officers have ruled out the involvement of the underworld, unlike in the abduction case of the jeweller Bhaskar Parekh in which associates of Dawood Ibrahim were involved. “This appears to be a small time gang. We have briefed the Kolkota police about the case details,” said an official.
