Mumbai RUCKUS: Home department explores possibility of rearresting MNS chief in previous cases

The state Home Department is consulting legal experts and senior Maharashtra Police officers on its options in dealing with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray. One of the strongest legal recourses being explored is the possibility of Thackeray’s arrest for a breach of bail conditions in previous offences against him, police sources told Newsline.

“There is considerable movement on this whole issue. The home department is now consulting top legal experts and IPS officers on what action can possibly be taken against Raj Thackeray. Something which is being discussed is the possibility of arresting him for a breach of conditions imposed on him by the judiciary while being granted bail in previous offences against him,” said a top police officer, on condition of anonymity.

According to the officer, there were three or four prior cases registered against Thackeray, in which he is currently out on bail. Each of these cases, and the court orders passed while granting Thackeray bail, are now being reviewed.

On February 13 last year, Thackeray was arrested from his residence on charges of promoting enmity between groups. His remarks against North Indian migrants had sparked off sporadic incidents of violence across the state. The MNS chief was produced before a Vikhroli court, and was granted bail minutes later.

In the corresponding bail order, Judge SJ Sharma had imposed the following conditions on Thackeray — “(He) shall cooperate with the investigating officer and shall take care that there shall be no breach of peace/ tranquility in Maharashtra State by his leadership in his political career.”

Sources said that the government was now considering whether the warning issued by Thackeray last month that his MNS legislators would ensure that all MLAs in the state took their oaths in Marathi constituted a breach of bail conditions since it caused the ruckus in the Maharashtra Assembly and the resulting communal tension in pockets of the city on Monday. On Monday, four MNS legislators assaulted Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi in the state Assembly as he took his oath in Hindi, resulting in a four-year suspension for them.

this is not against Hindi but this mad fellow named Abu aazmi. by Marathi on 11 Nov 2009

though in wrong context, but we all Indians should be proud of slap on the face of this vulgar. He insulted Marathi and got its fruit. Love is Hindi is accepteble, but hatred towards Marathi or any regeional language won't be tolerated. It is very sad to see reactions of Hindi people, and to their dismay, Hindi is not our national language. please consult the constitution.

It is high time we hindi speaking people get united and teach lessons to Marathis by Mona Sharma on 11 Nov 2009

Raj Thackeray is breeding a new kind of terrorism based on regional langauge Marathism. South Indians who are advocating for their local language do not feel shame to learn english. Where their local pride goes when they learn english ? We thought that coming power of congress will help but our speculation proved wrong. Thousands of innocent hindi people have lost their kins, near and dear ones. These Thackerays and their followers would only feel if they lose their near and dear ones in civil war incited by them. Every action has its reaction. Someone someday from hindi heartland would raise his voice and take revenge from Marathi criminals who are challenging our hindi speaking brethren. If Marathi wants to speak their language who prevents them ? Should Marathis be slapped and driven out from foreign countries if they speak Marathis ? It is high time we hindi speaking people get united and teach lessons to Marathis.
