The incident took place at Rander in Surat. The woman’s husband said that he suspected the involvement of her uncle and his friends in the incident.
The police said that Geeta, the wife of one Jignesh Patel, a resident of Parasmani Apartment, near Palanpur Octroi post in Rander, was taking a bath when a group of five arrived at her residence and managed to gain access into the house, on the pretext that they had come to see the house.
The assailants managed to catch Geeta and forced her into in a Tata Sumo car. Geeta's mother-in-law Manjula and her daughter, Smita, raised an alarm and alerted neighbours.
Though they managed to note the registration number of the vehicle, the alleged kidnappers managed to escape from the locality.
A complaint was lodged by Manjula at Rander. The area residents also handed the car’s registration number, GJ-6- 9454 to the police.
The Surat police commissioner has declared a red alert in the city. Police sources said that vehicles were checked at the entry and exit points of the city.
The police added that Geeta was staying with her uncle, Modha Choudhary at the Panas dairy staff quarters in Palanpur taluka, before enrolling into a nurse education in Ashakta Ashram Hospital.
Her husband Jignesh was also employed in the medical store of the hospital. They got married on November 18, 2007 in Surat. The marriage was reportedly solemnised against the uncle's wishes.
Jignesh said, “Geeta had called me on February 1 and complaint of harassment by her uncle and aunt. She suspected that her uncle must have learnt about her marriage. I brought her to Surat and she started staying at my place. Even my family members had accepted her.”
He added, “Meanwhile, her uncle made efforts to lure her to return to Palanpur. They were against the relationship and had even attempted to threaten me. I had also submitted an application to the Rander police on February 12. We were expecting such an incident.”
Inspector V G Patel said, “We conducted preliminary checks on the registration number of the car. We found that it was registered in Vadodara and the number was given to a frenty car, while the car used in the crime was a Tata Sumo.
“We suspect the involvement of Geeta's uncle and his friends in the incident. We are making efforts to locate the girl and are in contact with the Palanpur police.”
