Surat An injured owl, which belongs to an endangered species as per the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, was rescued by a doctor in Mandvi taluka of Surat district on Sunday. Dr Jayesh Merchant said the bird was injured in an attack by a murder of crows. The owl was handed over to the Forest department after primary medication.

The spotted owl is high in demand due to its use in sorcery. One such owl is priced at Rs 50,000 approximately in Surat district, sources said.

Earlier, these owls were seen in large numbers in Surat villages. But with rampant hunting by villagers, the number has considerably gone down across the district.

Merchant said: “I found the bird trapped in kite threads on a tree near my hospital in Mandvi taluka. I was shocked to find it in that condition. Nowadays, people hunt these birds for black magic practices. These birds are useful for farmers who hunt rodents in the fields. I have handed the owl to the district forest officials after giving it some primary medication.”

Mandvi Range Assistant Forest Officer D S Choudhary said: “Earlier, such spotted owls were found in the interior villages of Surat district. Today, it is an endangered species. We are also trying our best to educate the people not to hunt these birds and we are also keeping a close watch in the villages. The villagers here believe in black magic, where these birds are used.”
