The patient who had been operated upon for cancer of larynx (voice box) in 2007 lost his speech after the operation. The team of doctors at DMCH, headed by Dr Hemant Chopra, professor and head of ENT department at DMCH, restored his speech using prosthesis in a procedure conducted on January 26.
For almost one year, Surinder Kumar grappled with lack of speech as he tried alternative methods of communication like esophageal speech, sign language and writing, but was not very happy with his quality of life.
Last year when Surinder was diagnosed with the cancer of larynx, he was worried about the outcome of the procedure to treat cancer. He got cured of cancer as his voice box was removed. But now he was left voice less too.
ENT surgeons of the hospital — Dr Hemant Chopra, Dr Munish Munjal, Dr Kapil Dua and Dr Ashok Tiwari, a guest surgeon from Northamptonshire, UK, successfully completed a valvular prosthesis connecting his trachea and esophagus which enabled him to speak the very next day after surgery.
Dr Chopra said the technique of valvular prosthesis was beneficial in all such cases of cancer where the voice box has to be removed to cure the patients from cancer. “The patients should not feel disheartened in case they are rendered speechless as it can be stored with this procedure,” he said.
