Pune A senior software professional working and residing at the Magarpatta city in Hadapsar has landed in the police net for allegedly opening fire on a group of three friends following a quarrel over rash driving on Mundhwa Road in the wee hours on Friday.

The Hadapsar police have arrested Ashish Naresh Dixit (35), project manager with a software company in Magarpatta city in this case. Satish Madhavrao Gaikwad (42), a resident of Keshav Nagar in Mundhwa, who suffered from a bullet injury during the incident, has lodged the police complaint.

According to the police, Dixit enjoyed a night party of a friend in Koregaon Park after which he was returning home in his car at around 4 pm. Police said that Dixit had consumed some alcohol during the party.

At the same time, Gaikwad and his two friends Pramod Gaikwad and Sachin Jadkar were going to a friend’s house in Hadapsar via Mundhwa road in a car. Police said that Dixit was driving his car in zig-zag manner ahead of them.

Annoyed with this, Gaikwad and his friends intercepted Dixit in front of the main gate of Magarpatta city. The trio questioned him for rash driving. As the quarrel worsened, Dixit removed his revolver and fired a bullet in air. He further fired two more bullets in the direction of the trio, of which one passed through Gaikwad’s leg.

Police havaldars Pradeep Gurav and Rajaram Kedari, who were patrolling in the same area, heard the sound of firing. They reached the spot just while Dixit made away in his car. The policemen chased Dixit on a motorcycle and nabbed him in Magarpatta city with a revolver in his possession.

Gaikwad was admitted to a private hospital for treatment. His condition is reported to be stable. Meanwhile, police booked Dixit on charges of attempt to murder. Police have seized his revolver and gun licence.

Dixit told the police that he had to open fire in self-defence as Gaikwad and his two friends overpowered him.Sub-inspector Anant Nikam, who is investigating the case said that Dixit was a native of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. He was in Pune for the last one and a half years. He was residing at a luxurious flat in Jasminiya building in Magarpatta city on rental basis. His family resides in Kolkatta.

Senior inspector V S Sonwane said that revolver seized from Dixit was of Indian make. “Dixit’s father died a few years ago. After that he had transferred his father’s gun licence on his name. Dixit was produced before the court and was remanded to police custody till Tuesday,” said Sonawane.
