A special meeting concerning state’s food supplies and BPL families was held at the chief minister’s chamber at Writers’ Building late on Monday evening.
Besides Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the meeting was attended by chief secretary Amit Kiran Deb, minister for food and supplies Paresh Chandra Adhikary, minister for panchayat and rural development Surya Kanta Mishra and senior officials.
Talking to the media after the meeting, Adhikary said around 60 per cent of BPL families have got their cards. But these need to be renewed. The remaining 40 per cent will also get the cards once their claims are established by the department of panchayat and rural development.
“Work (concerning cards) had started in Nadia and Darjeeling. But it had to be stopped due to some reason. The panchayat department will prepare a list of the (newly added) BPL families and submit it to us. After this we will issue the cards. We receive foodgrain for 51.79 lakh families from the Centre. There’s an additional 2.97 lakh families for whom we aren’t getting foodgrain. We are taking care of the balance,” Adhikary said.
He said the export of rice from West Bengal to Bangladesh is affecting market prices. “We feel that the prices can be better regulated if the state government has control over the rice export instead of having it done through licencees. The chief secretary will take up the matter with the Union government shortly,” Adhikary said.
