“We are all for alliance in Bengal. The doors for talks are open. We still have time till May 7, the last date for withdrawal of nominations. Our alliance was successful in the Lok Sabha elections. Our alliance will be there in the crucial Assembly elections next year,” said Congress Legislature Party leader Manas Bhuniya today.
Bhuniya blamed the uncompromising attitude of the Trinamool for the breakdown of seat-sharing talks. “We tried our best. We held meetings with Trinamool leaders at all level, besides with Mamata Banerjee herself. We just wanted seats in the KMC where we have come first or second last time. They gave us 25 seats of which in 13, none of the opposition candidates would have won. But they did not relent,” said Bhuniya.
The Congress leader said in Murhsidabad, the Trinamool did not finish first or second in any of the municipal seats last time and so seats were not shared with them.
On Banerjee’s allegations that the Congress was favouring the CPM in Bengal, Bhuniya said leaders should desist from making such remarks. “We fought against CPM in the state. It is not right to call us their B-team. One should desist from making such remarks,” he said.
Meanwhile, it seems difficult for the two parties to come together on seat-sharing for the May 30 civic polls.
According to sources, the Congress, which earlier announced the list of 88 candidates, is now trying to expand it to cover some other wards of the KMC too.
