Kolkata In a novel campaign to increase awareness among the common people on basic banking operations and facilities offered by banks, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has taken the route of Kolkata’s age-old tram cars with help from the state transport and finance departments.

The first tram showcasing various RBI operations as well as some basic information regarding banking will be flagged off tomorrow by state Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta at Gariahat tram depot, which will go up to Esplanade. There will be a similar tram which will ply along a different route, according to state transport department officials.

“The project has been taken up on the occasion of the platinum jubilee celebrations of the RBI. In this tram, there will be RBI officials who will deliver lectures on the various facilities offered by RBI and other banks. There will be posters and pamphlets in the tram that will be aimed at making people bank-savvy,” a senior RBI official said.

For example, these days, people face great difficulties in differentiating between a genuine bank note and a fake one and the tram car will have a pamphlet called “know your bank note”. There will also be literature on how to open a bank account without facing hassles. “This is the first such campaign in the country. We have chosen the tram car because Kolkata is synonymous with the vehicle. At present, we are conducting the campaign on two tram cars on two routes,” the RBI official said.

The state government, too, expressed its happiness over the development. “I am quite happy that the RBI is using our trams for this purpose. It will be greatly useful for the people,” said state Transport Minister Ranjit Kundu.
