On February 9, the chief minister had said he would set up a committee to work out the modalities of the promised quota for Muslims. The minority department of the state government, which is directly under the chief minister, was asked to include as many Muslim groups as possible in the OBC net so as to give them reservation on the lines of Kerala model. But officials in the department are said to have advised the CM that any such decision could be struck down in court as happened in Andhra Pradesh.
Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty, who was supposed to examine the relevant file, evaded a direct reply on its status. “I will look into it,” he said.
When contacted, Minister for Backward Class Welfare Jogesh Burman put up a brave face. “Our aim is to provide reservation for Muslim OBCs. The question is how to do it. We will have to do it keeping in mind all provisions of law. We are consulting legal experts too,” Burman said.
