The experts stressed on the tactics to be adopted for motor, language and emotional development, sense of belongingness and security, self-esteem, self-confidence, brain games for kids and promoting learning through ryhthemic movement. Many parents of kindergarten classes actively participated in the talk show. K Sudesh and Shelly Chopra, both primary school teachers from BCM school, gave about a dozen tips to parents.
K. Sudesh said, “Maximum development of a child’s brain takes place up to 10 years. But the first three years of a child are most important because maximum branches develop during this period, so parents should be more participating with the toddlers during this period.” For making your child learn sharing, she said, “Take two toys. Give one to your child and take other in your hand. and after sometime swap your toy with the child.”
He also wanted parents to give the child a touch therapy. Sudesh said, “While giving bath to the child, tell him/her that I am washing your neck now or washing your hand. This way the child will learn about body parts. Through music therapy you can develop and strengthen your child’s brain connections. To make your child learn about different types of sound, take different pulses in different bowls and strike each bowl with a string and different sound be heard. This way child would be able to understand different sounds.”
Telling about an important exercise, Sudesh said, “Muscular exercises are must for a child. Majority of mothers are not aware as to how to improve the vision of their child. Switch off the light in a dark room and take a flash light in your hand. Move it from one corner to another and child will also move his or her eyes, and this way exercise of eye muscles will take place automatically. The vision of a child can be enhanced up to eight months.”
While Shelly, another teacher, said, “To make the toddler learn about counting and colours, draw a colourful “stapu” and then ask the child to jump in a specific colour box, or the box marked with a specific number. This way, the child will learn about colours as well as counting.” While P.K. Oberoi, headmistress, primary school, said, “The talk show was aimed at making parents aware about holistic growth of children in present scenario where bringing up children is the most arduous, complex and delicate task.”
Afterwards, parents asked many queries to the experts. Paramjit Kaur, the school principal, said, “In future, we will also hold such interactive sessions for our teachers and hope it would be very useful.”
