This is one of the busiest roads of the city and nearly 300 heavy-duty vehicles, including buses, tread on it. Year after year, the road has been re-laid, at not less than Rs 10 lakh, following major damages.

Now, to find a permanent solution to the problem, the civic body is ready to spend a whopping Rs 1.7 crore on the road.

Reasoning the huge expenditure, MC Commissioner G S Ghuman said: “We consulted the engineers from the Guru Nanak Engineering College. They suggested that we follow Reinforced Concrete Cement (RCC) technique instead of bitumen metalling, which was being employed over the years. No coal tar will be used in the new technique and the road will be made on a bed of iron bars to enable it to bear the weight of heavy-duty vehicles.”

Area councillor Prem Mittal, who recently switched from Congress to SAD, said: “After it is re-laid, the road will not break for the next 10 years and according to our contract, if any damage occurs, the contractor will repair the road free of cost.”

The cement thickness of the road will be nine inches and it will be ready within three months, Mittal added. “Earlier, bus drivers would never take a different route whenever the metalling work on the road was carried out. This is perhaps one of the reasons why it had to be re-laid so often,” he said.

This time, however, traffic will be diverted till the time work on the road is complete, Mittal said.
