Recession takes 2 lives as job market shrinks

New Delhi The global meltdown claimed two victims in the Capital on Monday.

Fifty-year-old Nangloi resident Man Singh gave up on his battle with a severe financial crunch and consumed poison on Sunday morning. Police sources said he worked with a private firm in Madipur, Punjabi Bagh. He succumbed on Monday.

Another young woman, 23-year-old Renu Masih from Pushp Vihar Saket, took her life on Monday morning.

Renu, who was laid off two months ago, died from hanging. Police sources said Renu was depressed. Her father Prem Masih is deputed as an official in the Ministry of External Affairs. The family stays in government housing, sources said.

Renu Masih was a graduate from the Jesus and Mary college of Delhi University in Dhaula Kuan.

Officers said Renu has two sisters and a brother, the youngest. Both sisters are married while the brother is in school.

The Station House Officer, Saket police station, Pankaj Singh confirmed the suicide and said they had not called in the parents yet for a statement.

Meltdown blues
* February 4, 2009: A 52-year-old man, from the Southwest district, committed suicide after losing heavily in shares. The deceased, Amar Pal, had invested in the market, but his finances were wiped out after the market went into a free fall. He is survived by his wife and two sons — Puneet, 23, a B tech student and Sumit, 22.
* OCTOBER 26, 2008: A 40-year-old businessman shot himself dead, reportedly because he was neck deep in debt. Ashish Lal Khatri lived in Narela. Sources said he had lost money in the hotel business. He owned five, including one in Vrindavan.
