"Cinema in specific and entertainment in general is here to stay. While expensive luxury goods like cars are being put on hold, small things that take you away from stress appeal to people more in the time of recession," Shravan Shroff, MD of Fame (I) Limited, which has opened the multiplex at Shalimar Mega Mall, Sector 5, Panchkula, talks about how even in this time of recession, it makes good business sense to launch a new venture. "The money spent per head at a theatre has gone up by 17 per cent and we have effectively raised the ticket prices by 10 per cent in the last one year," Shroff supports his view with logistics.
"Rentals have gone down by about 20 to 40 per cent and options of revenue-sharing basis are now being considered," he insists that if we see a relatively less crowd at any given multiplex, then it's not a reason to fret. "From one multiplex in the tricity, we have a host of options to choose from. Soon, we will see a time when we will be going to one within four kms from where we stay. But expecting all to be chock-a-block is not possible. Even if we have about 35 per cent occupancy we break even," says Shroff. Probably that's why they have planned about 140 screens across India this year, with one Gold Class theatre at City Emporio, Industrial Area, "the consumer in the tricity spends conspicuously and likes luxury, be it brands, cars or flights. And this class has been designed on those lines. It will have 55 seats which will actually be 150-degree recliner sofas, a 3,000 sq.ft. lounge and ample leg space," Shroff describes the "experience" which will open soon. Keep watching!
