Ludhiana Even as the re-employment of Dr Gurkirpal Singh as Estate Officer at the Punjab Agricultural University has come under criticism by the faculty, PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Manjit Singh Kang does not seem unduly perturbed. “This instance should not be treated as setting any precedent. Each case that comes up for re-employment would be treated on its own merit,” said Dr Singh. “PAU rules permit us to grant extension for two years. And Dr Gurkirpal Singh was considered as he has been carrying out his work very well. As for the teachers’ contention that other retirees will also expect re-employment, I have made it quite clear that each case put up for consideration will be treated separately,” he added. In a first-of-its-kind decision, Dr Gurkirpal Singh was granted re-employment for one year by the PAU recently. The announcement had raised the hackles of the Punjab Agricultural University Teachers’ Association (PAUTA), which even submitted a memorandum to the PAU V-C on the issue.
