Rehman snatched the opening frame in the best-of-five contest and warmed up with a good start. But an out-of-form Kapoor managed to draw level on two occasions as he clinched the second and fourth frames to force the decider.
Kapoor put behind his poor form and made a clearance in the crucial fourth after trailing by 22 points. But his challenge ended in the fifth as Rehman surged to a substantial 60-point lead with the colours still remaining.
In other close matches, Hitesh Kotwani and Rahul Narang also registered exciting 3-2 wins to enter the fourth round.
Sanjay Jhaveri of PJ Hindu Gymkhana ended the winning streak of Kekoo Nicholson of CCI with 60-31, 54-42, 63-20 win in another third round tie.
Nicholson had his moments in the second frame and could have stretched his formidable opponent. But Jhaveri held on and made a clearance from brown to black for a 2-0 lead before sealing the match.
