Kolkata The death of 17-year-old Arpan Mukherjee in the Dum Dum area sparked a controversy with his family members and friends blaming the school authorities for his death.

Arpan, who was a Class XII student of an English-medium school, fell ill in the school and died a few hours after he was admitted to a private nursing home on Tuesday night.

The guardians of other students staged a demonstration outside the school today for alleged negligence of the school authorities towards the boy when he had fallen ill. The school authorities have, however, denied the allegation.

Police sources said that the boy had complained of breathing difficulty to his teacher at around 9.30 am. Within a few minutes, he went to the school toilet where he became unconscious and fell on the floor, due to which he received a deep injury on his head.

He was shifted to a local hospital but his relatives alleged that he did not receive proper medical care. He was then shifted to a private nursing home where he died.

Arpan’s family members claimed that the school’s negligence and delay in giving medical treatment to Arpan caused his death. They said that they would file a case of negligence against the school authorities.

His parents said that they received the news of Arpan’s health at 1.30 pm, nearly four hours after the incident occurred. By the time they reached the hospital, the boy had died. Arpan’s father Alok Mukherjee said the school authorities failed to act promptly when the child first complained of breathing trouble. Parents of other students, meanwhile, demanded the school principal’s transfer. A guardian said they were all terrified after the incident which has exposed the school’s callous attitude towards its students.
