Rajkot Jamnagar is all set to become the refining hub of the world with the Reliance Petroleum Limited (RPL) commissioning its refinery at the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Moti Khavdi on Thursday.

With an aggregate crude oil processing capacity, including old and new refineries, of 1.24 million barrels per day, RPL has become the sixth largest refinery in the world. The secondary processing units are now under synchronisation and commissioning. The entire refinery complex is expected to attain full capacity shortly.

Lauding the efforts of the RPL team, Reliance Industries Limited chairman Mukesh Ambani said the commissioning started in a record time, which “demonstrates the strength of our project management skills”. “The entire team has shown admirable commitment, dedication and teamwork to achieve this milestone. We, at Reliance, continue to be committed to the long term potential of the refining sector. We will leverage our competitive advantages of scale, complexity and capability to process a wide range of crude oils and flexibility to produce high quality transportation fuels and create significant value for all its stakeholders,” he added.

The commissioning of this refinery catapults Reliance into the league of the largest refineries globally, both in terms of complex refining capacity and earning potential. The state-of-the-art refinery has been completed in 36 months from concept to commissioning, which is a new benchmark for building a grassroots refinery of this scale.

RPL refinery at a glance
* It is one of the world’s most complex refineries with a Nelson Complexity index of 14.0. This will enable the refinery to process heavy-crude varieties and produce superior quality products that meet stringent specifications, even beyond the forthcoming Euro IV norms.
* The high complexity will also present a significant competitive advantage in the current industry landscape of increasingly heavy and sour new crude discoveries. In addition, the widening light-heavy differentials in recent years will add to its competitiveness.
* RPL refinery is located adjacent to RIL’s existing refinery and petrochemicals complex, which is among the largest and most efficient complexes in the world. Through sharing of best practices and leveraging the existing infrastructure, RPL will stand to gain in the areas of operational efficiency, logistics, crude sourcing, product placement and risk management
* Close proximity to the Middle East. The result: lower ship turnaround time and reduced crude freight costs.
