Chandigarh The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed Reliance Communications Limited to pay Rs 5,000 as compensation for causing harassment to a customer by illegally disconnecting her phone even after she paid all the bills on time.

The complainant, Shabnam Sood, said that for the past two years, she had been regularly paying the monthly bills for the Inter-Broadband installed at her residence.

She received a bill of Rs 650 for June 2008, and while she paid the money, the company made phone calls to her claiming she had not made the payment.

She lodged a complaint but to no avail. The next bill for July read Rs 1192.83, including the previous month’s dues.

A bill of Rs 1073.55 was again served to her despite the phone being disconnected in the first week of July, 2008.

This bill, however, reflected the bill amount of Rs 650 as “received” well in time. Owing to the harassment caused, she moved the forum.

In its reply, Reliance Communications admitted that the payment of Rs 650 had been made by the complainant and the receipt was issued to her but due to some error, the amount could not be updated into the system.

The forum held the company guilty of harassing the complainant and depriving her of the telephone connection despite regular payments being made by her.
