Pune Water-starved Pune finally had a date with the rains on Friday when the long wait got over. More rains are expected in the next four days, promising a huge relief to the city.

On Friday, the city received 6 mm rainfall till 5.30 pm as it drizzled for better part of the day. According to IMD officials, the circulation over Orissa may help increase the rain activity in the city.

The IMD has predicted rains all over the state on Saturday. However, the impact will vary from place to place. “While heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Konkan coast, only isolated places in Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada will be lucky to get rains. Vidarbha will also get good showers,” said Medha Khole, director, weather section, IMD, Pune.

“The west coast of the state is receiving heavy showers under the influence of offshore trough extending from Konkan to Kerala coast,” Khole said. “However, in Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada there is not much impact. If a low-pressure area is developed in Bay of Bengal, the activity can increase in this part as well. However, the circulation over Orissa may help increase the activity,” she added.

Meanwhile, the catchment areas of the dams in Mula Mutha sub basin that supply water to Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad received good rainfall in the last 24 hours. The rainfall recorded in mm till 8 am on Friday was: Pavana 70, Temghar 42, Warasgaon 38, Panshet 39 and Khadakwasla 7.
