Kolkata A counsel of the Bar Association of Calcutta High Court on Friday urged the Division Bench headed by Chief Justice S S Nijjar to witness the video footage of the November 17, 2007 rally where CPM leaders Biman Bose, Binoy Konar and Shayamal Chakraborty had allegedly made remarks against the judiciary for its verdict on the Nandigram firing.

Delivering the verdict on November 16, 2007, the Calcutta High Court had held the March 14 incident of police firing at Nandigram “unconstitutional and illegal.” Just a day later, the three CPM leaders had allegedly criticised the judiciary at a rally held in Rani Rashmoni Road. The Bar Association of Calcutta High Court had then filed a contempt petition against the three leaders and the case came up for hearing on Friday.

Advocate Saktinath Mukherjee argued that the rally was organised with an intention to attack the judiciary and the petitioners. The leaders had not denied in their petitions their remark against the judiciary and tried to defend their remark, Mukherjee said. He said that the court could watch the video footage of the rally to understand the remarks which were made by the leaders. The Bench has fixed the next hearing on January 28 and 29.
