Pune, February 22 Mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale on Friday directed the civic administration to clear the encroachments along the pavements including the multi-facility kiosks and police chowkies built by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) itself.

She issued the directions to the PMC during the general body meeting. The discussion on pavements started with BJP corporator Anil Shirole seeking clarification from the civic officials for repeatedly digging a footpath on Prabhat Road and failing to keep its own promise of not digging repeatedly.

Congress corporator Deepak Mankar said, “A few years back, many streetside reading facilities were constructed by encroaching upon the pavements. Now these facilities are absolutely lying unused. So what about Rs 3 crore wasted on these? How will they be recovered?”

Some other corporators pointed out that Balgandharva police chowkie and many multi-facility kiosks built by the PMC are standing in the middle of the pavements, following which the mayor asked the civic administration to clear up whatever structures there are on the pavements including the kiosks.

Meanwhile, Bhawani Peth ward office on Friday cracked down on gutka vendors near some municipal schools under its jurisdiction.

Action was taken against 20 such vendors at Baburao Sanas school, Raja Dhanraj Girji school and goods worth Rs 5,000 were confiscated from them.
