Urging students to come ahead and spend some time in Egypt and the United Kingdom, the organisation's general secretary, Nikitin Contractor said, volunteering is a new concept, wherein the students get to work and simultaneously learn about various cultures. He said it helps a student to settle easily in their respective field.
“Every year in the month of May and June, a group of 50 students from various states of India go to Israel and stay in the kibbutz or communes, helping Israelis in various activities. They also get the opportunity to interact with other volunteers from countries like Korea, the US and Japan,” said Contractor at the seminar on Saturday.
According to him, “the organisation supports but doesn't sponsor the tour to Israel, as most of the students can arrange for a tour themselves following the interactions.
This year, the organisation is also planning to take some students from the rural areas of the state. “We are planning to take around 30 students from Belapur and Kheda in May and June,” he said.
Since 1998, the organisation has been taking 10 to 15 students from the university, who become a part of the international community service in Israel.
After around five months, the students are taken to the UK, where they find work for themselves. "Most of the students find volunteering jobs such as teaching, working with environmental organisations like the Centre for Alternative Technology or even working in electronic firms like Kingston Electronics," added Contractor. Addressing a group of students, Jignesh Dave, a former MSU student who went to Israel as a volunteer last year, shared his experiences. "This helped me to learn a lot about other cultures and also I became more open to others' religious beliefs," said Dave, who had worked for two months in the UK before joining Friends of Israel.
