Rending Veil

The gaggle of pigtailed Afghan girls, who was at the NSD Theatre Utsav with their play Cry of History, did not seem the least bit perturbed about their first performance ever — and that too on a strange stage in another country. Instead, in between giggles, they revealed how they hero-worshipped Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai and mooned over the dances of Bollywood.

Later, on Thursday evening, when 9-30-year-olds took the stage, dressed in flowing, white abayas, the story of the women of Islam and the troubles of contemporary Afghanistan seemed a tad too weighty for the cast, mostly schoolgirls.

They are part of an all-girl troupe in conservative Kabul. Monireh Hashmi, the 22-year-old director of the play and head of the troupe, said, “We are perpetually fighting for our rights.”And the battle is set to continue offstage. “We have decided to say no to forced marriages,” said Razia, a 17-year-old studying in Class X. Mariam, who married a 30-year-old when she was just 12 and divorced him at 24, said, “Today my kids want me to be the greatest actor in Afghanistan.” No wonder they weren’t perturbed by the NSD.
