Dr Mishra said that wheat production would continue to play a important role towards food security of the country. Dr Kang highlighted that PAU varieties of wheat and other crops were well received by farmers, adding that the variety PBW 343, released in 1995, occupied more than 90% of area in the state. He further said that to address the issues of monoculture, another variety PBW 502 had been released by the university. He said that the university laid emphasis on the aspects of quality and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses while developing any crop variety. Dr Rajaram and Dr Mishra appreciated the research and development programme of PAU and the scientific contributions of Dr Kang, in particular.
Dr P.S. Minhas, director of research, PAU, while highlighting the research programmes of the PAU, said that seeds of PAU varieties were in great demand by the farmers.
To honour Dr Rajaram, mementos were presented to him. Dr. Gurnam Singh Dhindsa, the in-charge of Wheat Programme at PAU was also present, on this occasion.
