Ahmedabad In a brazen molestation attempt, a city policeman, Bhupendrasinh Raol, allegedly misbehaved with a 17-year-old schoolgirl, Preety Rajput, on Monday. The incident happened in the afternoon when Rajput was returning from school. As the whole thing occurred in full public view in the city’s Ramol area, irate residents intervened and even bashed up Raol for his act.

A 49-year-old constable with the Gaekwad Haveli police, Raol was in an inebriated state at the time, police said. The drunken cop, who was in uniform, intercepted Rajput near a busy road at Modinagar in Ramol. Raol held the victim’s hand and propositioned her, said police.

“Chal, maara sathe prem kar (come, love me),” Raol was quoted having said that to Rajput in the complaint filed with Ramol police. Some passers-by, said police, intervened after they saw Raol misbehaving with the girl. They even beat him up.

A police team spotted the scuffle while passing by and rescued Raol. “He was in an inebriated state at the time of the incident. We also found a pouch of country-made liquor in his pocket,” said Inspector K M Jadeja.

Based on the complaint filed by the victim, the police have booked Raol under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code (Assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and for violating the state’s prohibition law.
