The first incident took place at Kalali after a drunkard created a ruckus at a religious gathering in the village falling under the jurisdiction of Makarpura police station. Later, the local residents raided a liquor den and destroyed as many as 26 barrels of liquor.
In another similar incident, the residents of Alkapuri area demolished a hutment near Genda Circle after they came to know that a lady was selling liquor from there.
In Kalali, it all happened when a ‘satsang sabha’ was going on and a drunkard started arguing with the devotees. Irked by the incident, the residents decided to teach a lesson to the supplier of the liquor. The residents raided a den near Navi Nagari area of the village and destroyed the barrels containing liquor. While the incident continued for more than an hour, the police arrived only after the villagers had already destroyed the liquor barrels.
Police officials, however, maintained that they were present when the locals were destroying the dens and that an official complaint has been registered in the case.
“The police arrived only after we completed the job of destroying the den and had beaten up bootlegger Ganpat Waghari. Now we have decided to keep an eye on the den because we know that the bootlegger would start his business after some time since police is not interested in raiding the dens,” said Jayesh Patel, a resident of the area.
In Alkapuri, the residents had approached the police about the sale of liquor in the area. The illegal activity had continued for long and no action was taken by the police. The residents alleged that the lady who sold the liquor in the area said openly that police would not take any action against her.
