The project is meant to improve power supply to the upcoming malls on Ferozepur road. The Punjab State Electricity Board will spend Rs 10 crore on the project, which is expected to be complete by April-end this year.
Unlike the underground laying that has been done at the PSEB’s own sub-station, on Ferozepur road, the wires are being laid overhead. Wires have been dumped in a one-acre green belt which was developed by Canal Avenue residents.
“Residents are worried the way wiring is being done and that, too, at the entry point to BRS Nagar. It could have been underground like they have done at the PSEB office,” said Gagan Arora, a resident of Canal Avenue.
Earlier, too, the PSEB had damaged this green belt while setting up a tower without seeking permission from the Forest Department. Malls such as Ansal Plaza, Flamez, Westend, MBD Neopolis, OMAX and several others will get power from this sub-station. Westend has already applied for 4500KW while Flamez and Ansal Plaza have asked for 1800KW and 4600 KW respectively.
BS Bath, Chief Engineer, Ludhiana central PSEB, said, “I will direct the staff to take proper measures,” said Bath. “Underground wiring would have cost us 10 times more than laying the wires overhead which we cannot afford at this stage,” said Bath.
