Kolkata The results of the now suspended Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) 2005 elections, which were held back as per a Delhi High Court directive, were announced here today by Bengal Hockey Association secretary Gurbux Singh. Gurbux, who had been appointed chief electoral officerduring the polls, declared the results at a press conference at his office here. “I was asked to declare it so I did it, relieving myself of my duty. The sealed envelope was lying unopened and today I got a fax from the IHF to declare it in front of witnesses,” Gurubux said.

The IHF executive committee member Narendra Batra had filed a case to the Delhi High Court before the last elections seeking an amendment of the rules that would restrict the term of the office bearers to a maximum of eight years in all sports associations. The court had allowed the IHF to hold the elections but didn’t allow them to declare the results. Now, following KPS Gill’s initiative, the court has given the go-ahead to declare the results.

Gill, who contested for the president’s post, was a runaway winner with 32 votes out of 36. His contestant Batra managed only four votes. Jyothi Kumaran was re-elected as the secretary winning over Batra by a 33-3 margin.
