According to information, a review committee submitted its findings to the UT Home Secretary after inspecting various schools. Apart from the inspection reports, a proposal with various steps to be taken to improve the scheme has also been tabled by the committee.

Confirming the development, Director Public Instructions (Schools) Samwartak Singh said: “We are aware of the review committee that was formed to look into the quality of mid-day meals. The Education department will implement the steps suggested by the committee in full spirit. The department is keen to improve not only the quality of food that is being served, but also focus on other factors like menu and hygiene among other things.”

The delegation has laid emphasis on a transparent and accountable system for better implementation of the scheme. The committee has also recommended providing LPG burners in schools so that students are served hot meals.

To measure the quantity of food being served and to avoid food wastage, the committee also recommended that utensils of different sizes be made available to schools.

The report also reveals frequent complaints about the quality of food being cooked by the NGO Shivanand Swami. The review committee has decided to issue a show cause notice to the NGO.
