Kolkata Unidentified miscreants shot a 42-year-old dead on Friday midnight at Canning in South 24-Parganas. The victim, Rabin Sardar, who was a rickshaw-puller from Dhulibati village, was shot in his eye and head from a close range, a police officer said.

The victim’s wife Usharani, who was a witness to the murder, told the officer that around 12.30 am, 10-12 armed people called for Rabin outside his home. The victim opened the window and tried to run for safety when he saw them. Usharani said the miscreants, whose faces were covered, however, managed to shoot him and flee.

Trinamool leader Mukul Roy visited the area on Saturday and blamed the CPM for the killing. “He was an active supporter of our party and was killed by CPM cadres. A complaint has been lodged with the Canning police station. Land and Land Reforms Minister Rezzaq Mollah is responsible for the murder and his name should top the list of accused in the FIR,” Roy said.

But district Congress president Arnab Roy said the victim from his party and had never joined the Trinamool.

South 24-Parganas SP L N Meena said the body has been sent for a postmortem and efforts are on to nab the culprits.
