* From camera-toting foreign tourists to those expecting a grand fireworks display at midnight, the motley crowd was somewhat thinner than in earlier years, with many more gathering at Girgaum Chowpatty instead. Deputy Chief Minister RR Patil made a brief visit around 11 pm, his entourage of gun-wielding bodyguards arousing much curiosity.
* Near the spot where passengers board for boatrides, a scuffle broke out between one boat party organiser and a group of youths. “We bought passes worth Rs 500 and the passes mention music, a deejay and food. We could not get even a decent glass of water,” raged one teenager. The police whisked away some of the enraged revellers along with the organiser, still promising a refund to his disgruntled customers.
* Elsewhere in the city, from Bachubai ki Wadi — the city’s last home to the mujra—to Juhu beach, from five-star parties to roadside revelry, the new year was welcomed with lights and laughter. In true Mumbai style, a special last train left for Virar from Churchgate at 1.45 am — the first local train service of the new year.
