Vadodara Barely a fortnight after a basketball court worth Rs 15 lakh was inaugurated in the M S University (MSU) pavilion, the rings in the court are found to have been badly damaged.

The officials in the university's physical education department responsible for the upkeep of the pavilion have passed the buck to the University authorities. Sources said that two of the four basketball court rings were bent as they did not have adequate support.

P B Thumar, the Director of Physical Education, MSU, said, "I am not responsible. Some students must have played a mischief." When inquired, the director refused to divulge details about the cost of the rings.

Officials claiming anonymity said that each measure about the development of the ground was taken under the supervision of Thumar.

The ground which is adjacent to the pavilion building does not have any drinking water facility. The situation is more baffling as the multi-purpose ground includes a volleyball court, a tennis court, a table-tennis court and a common ground for other sports besides having a basketball court. Though eight regular grounds personnel are assigned the responsibility of maintaining the ground, it is not being properly levelled.

The authorities have also decided to collect Rs 20 more as development fees from nearly 3,500 students of the university. Earlier, the students paid Rs 3.

Priyadarshi Patel, the contractor of the basketball ground said, "A few days back, I noticed a dent in the rings. I am trying to make arrangement for giving support to the rings."

Patel said each rings costs Rs 1,500. "However, we are trying to replace the whole ring with another ring worth Rs 9,000, which would be brought from Delhi."
