“I have heard they (members of other unions) have lodged a complaint with the chief secretary. Their allegations will be looked into,” Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen said .
On Wednesday, Mahakaran Sangram Committee, an alliance of seven Opposition unions, had called for a strike at Writers’ Buildings demanding more pay and allowances for the employees.
Around 2 pm, Co-ordination Committee members turned up there in full numbers and tore off posters of the rival unions to replace them with their own. After a stand-off between the two groups, the police intervened and quelled the disturbances. Some of the reporters who were covering the event were abused by the Committee members.
“They tore off our posters and when we tried to resist them, they manhandled us,” Sanket Chakraborty, secretary of the Opposition union, the Confederation of State Government Employees, said.
On Thursday too, there was slogan-shouting at Writers’. A large number of policemen were deployed.
“They (the Coordination Committee) are trying to stop all activities of the Opposition unions. But we will continue to fight for our rights till the end,” Samir Ranjan Majumder, joint secretary of West Bengal State Government Employees Union (Nabaparjay), said.
