Riverbed hotbed for green fight

The Supreme Court stayed an High Court order, which set up a committee to assess possible environmental damages to the Yamuna riverbed with the construction of the Commonwealth Games Village.

The High Court had set up an expert panel, headed by Nobel laureate R K Pachauri, to review the ecological impact of the ongoing construction of 1,100 flats at the Games Village. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had filed an appeal challenging the November 3 order.

Appearing on behalf of the Delhi government, Solicitor General G E Vahanvati had urged the apex court bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan to grant an ex-parte stay as the High Court’s directive would “seriously jeopardise the very idea of holding the 2010 Games in Delhi.” He said the High Court had erroneously come to the conclusion that construction was being carried out on the riverbed.
