The cover up comes 24 hours after hospital authorities had admitted that senior resident Dr Saurav Rana had not reported to work on Saturday night, leaving 16 critically injured burns patients unattended.
“I sympathise with the family but the nature of injuries was such that the chances of survival for the child were minimal. We will investigate the matter,” said Dr N K Chaturvedi, medical superintendent, RML Hospital.
Asked if he had spoken to Dr Rana about the incident, Dr Chaturvedi said it was the responsibility of the Head of the Burns department to do so.The infant was admitted to the burns ward of RML Hospital with 65 per cent injuries. The child’s condition deteriorated rapidly during Saturday night and in the alleged absence of the duty doctor, the baby died.
As per hospital records, the ‘on-call’ doctor was asked to report to work as the duty doctor had not turned up. By the time the doctor on-call reached the hospital around 5 am, the child had died.
