Surat Two employees of UCO Bank were robbed of cash to the tune of Rs 21 lakh while on their way to the Line Talkies.

According to the police, Babu Patel, a clerk with the bank’s Muglisara branch was on his way to the head office at Station Road to deposit the cash.

He was accompanied by bank peon Hitesh Patel. The two were riding an electric motorbike. Two youths on a motorcycle came close to their vehicle and the pillion rider snatched the bag from Babu. Though Babu raised an alarm, the two culprits managed to escape from the spot.

Babu informed the branch manager of the incident. The police rushed to the spot and started investigations.

Later Babu lodged a complaint of robbery with the Mahidharpura police station.

The police started checking two-wheelers and also set up alerts on the entry and exit points of Surat city.

The police now suspect the involvement of some insider in the incident, who could have possibly tipped off the robbers.

Mahidharpura Inspector A R Desai said: “The two were carrying cash regularly from the Muglisara branch and were depositing it at bank’s head office. Somebody might have kept a watch on their activities.”

He added: “We also suspect the involvement of some internal staff in the incident and it will come out during the investigations.”
