Robbers strike in Sonarpur, loot Rs 40 lakh

Kolkata A gang of robbers looted Rs 40 lakh on Monday when the money was being taken from a police station to the local post office at Sonarpur in South 24-Parganas.

The cash was kept at the Sonarpur police station for security reasons on Sunday evening. Around 9.45 am today, when the postmaster of Sonarpur post office, Vindyachal Ram, 54, along with a few officials, was on way to the post office carrying Rs 38.89 lakh, the robbers struck, said a senior officer.

While Ram sustained a bullet injury, homeguard Sujit Haldar, accompanying the postmaster, received multiple bullet injuries. The duo was admitted to Rabindranath Tagore Hospital. Superintendent of Police, South 24-Parganas, L N Meena said the matter is being investigated.
