According to S K Shukla, Inspector General of Police, who inspected the spot, the victims — Pramod Kumar Agrawal, a former bank manager, his wife Deepa Agrawal, a reader in Allahabad Degree College and his son Ankit — were bludgeoned to death with blunt weapons.
The lockers of the cupboards and briefcases were also found broken and some valuables and cash were also missing.
“Prima facie, the circumstantial evidence shows that murders were committed for robbery. There were more than five assailants. Four teams of policemen have been asked to workout the case,” said M A Jain, Senior Superintendent of Police. The accused are still at large.
Pramod’s brother Anand Agrawal had gone to meet his brother in the afternoon but he found the door locked from inside. Thinking that they would be sleeping, Anand made several attempts to wake them up but in vain.
Getting suspicious, he called a neighbour. Both entered the house from the balcony and saw the bodies lying in a pool of blood. Anand immediately informed the George Town police.
To take stock of the situation, senior police officers including Shukla, Jain and Deputy Inspector General of Police MK Basal reached the spot. “The miscreants went on a looting spree. It’s a serious matter and the police will definitely look into the matter,” said Shukla.
On Tuesday, two unidentified miscreants had decamped with Rs 6.5 lakh from Vipin, a trader, in Mutthiganj area after pointing a gun at him while he was on his way home after withdrawing the amount from the Mutthiganj branch of State Bank of India. The police have not yet made any progress into the case.
