Chandigarh SD College in Sector-32 has got a green signal from the University Grants commission (UGC) to start two more add-on courses in video reporting and electronics and its equipment maintenance on the campus.

The college has also received a grant of Rs 17 lakh to run the courses. The sum will be utilised to purchase books and journals, augmentation of laboratory facilities and the equipment required to run the programmes.

The college already offers 24 add-on courses. College authorities claim that it is the only college in the country to offer 26 such courses at a time.

Principal of the college, Dr A C Vaid, said: “Such vocational courses being offered at the undergraduate level will upgrade the quality of graduates and equip them with in-depth knowledge of their core discipline, besides opening an array of job opportunities for them.” Vaid added: “Each year, UGC invites proposals for such courses, out of which only a few are selected after rigorous screenings and presentations. It is an honour for us that despite such a fierce competition, the college manages to bag new add-on courses every year.”

The students will now have an option to choose from a diverse range of courses, which will help improve their market prospects in accordance with their interests and aptitudes, said Vaid.
