Mumbai The city’s famous Shivaji Park is set to dawn a new improved look. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved a Rs 2.28 crore development and beautification plan for the 96,000 sq ft ground at Dadar.

The civic standing committee on Wednesday approved the proposal for the same. The plan will include construction of a new entry gate, refilling of the ground with red earth, laying of new water pipelines and green grass, water sprinklers, development of the walking track and beautification by way of flowerbeds. The plan had been in the pipeline for the last three years. It met with some opposition after corporators protested the appointment of a consulting architect. That however has been cleared now.

Civic officials said that the ground had seen a lot of wear and tear creating problems for the players. Regular use of the ground for cultural programmes and non-sporting events has harmed the ground and made it hard and barren. “The contractor will now be responsible for the maintenance of the ground till another year after its development,” said an official.
